If you've ever seen a product description list "180 GSM" or "12oz denim" and wondered what it actually tells you, the short answer is: quite a lot. GSM is one of the most useful numbers in a garment's spec sheet, once you know how to read it.
What GSM Actually Measures
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It's a straightforward measurement: weigh a one-square-meter piece of the fabric, and that weight in grams is the GSM. Higher GSM means a heavier, denser, thicker fabric. Lower GSM means lighter and thinner. That's the whole concept — the rest is just learning what different ranges mean in practice.
Typical Ranges by Garment Type
- Lightweight T-shirts: 120-160 GSM — breezy, drapes close to the body, ideal for summer
- Standard everyday T-shirts: 160-200 GSM — the most common range, balancing structure and comfort
- Heavyweight T-shirts: 200-300 GSM — substantial hand-feel, holds shape well through repeated washing
- Oxford dress shirts: roughly 180-200 GSM
- Cotton twill chinos: 250-300 GSM for year-round wear, up to 350-450 GSM for winter-weight versions
- Denim: often starts around 280 GSM for lighter, fashion-forward fits, and climbs past 450 GSM for heavyweight, durability-focused denim
Why This Number Actually Matters
GSM affects far more than how a fabric feels in your hand. It influences:
- Durability — more fiber mass means more material to wear through before a garment breaks down
- Breathability — lower GSM fabrics generally allow more airflow; higher GSM fabrics insulate better but breathe less
- Drape and structure — heavier fabrics hold their shape and resist showing wrinkles or shape-loss; lighter fabrics move and flow more freely
- Opacity — a higher GSM fabric is less likely to be see-through
One Important Caveat
Higher GSM is not automatically "better quality." GSM measures weight, not craftsmanship — a heavy fabric can still be made from poor-grade fiber or inconsistent weaving. Real quality also depends on fiber grade, yarn twist, and finishing. GSM tells you how substantial a fabric is, not necessarily how well it was made. Think of it as one useful data point among several, not the whole story.
